Being a person who is very familiar with the West coast, one of the most striking qualities of this coast is the huge variety of people that you get throughout the different areas. From the laidback, surfer culture of southern California to the artsy, intellectual Northwest, you are sure to always be surprised. Although the coast is unified by its focus on healthy living, friendly attitude and zeal for life, there are distinct differences among the people on this side of the country. However, I would like to focus on what the people of Seattle add to this flavorful variety.
Seattle is for the local-vore and city-ist. Yes, those are two made up words. The local-vore finds pleasure in handcrafted chocolate from a local chocolatier, Theo Chocolate, while the city-ist roots for every possible Seattle team. Everywhere from a local bike polo team (yep, that’s a thing) to the Seattle Sounders, the city-ist is sure to be found in team colors, rooting for a favorite team. Also, you will often see the local-vore and city-ist in pairs; keep in mind that a Wal-Mart bag and 49er’s jersey might set them off.
Seattle is for the coffee, book, tech and rain lover. I moved to Seattle as a California girl. I loved burgers from retro burger chains and beaches, so it took quite a while to adjust to the indoor life. However, once you try our coffee (which really tastes better on a rainy day than a beachy one), then you just might pick up a book on local hiking, download an app with trails and buy a raincoat. Please, no one is forcing you, but give it a whirl, and see how you fare.
Seattle is for the interested. When I walk out my door, I have endless options of things to do. Whether I want to look at a gallery, watch a show, see a movie (both independent and mainstream), find a unique restaurant, watch a sport, play a sport, find a viewpoint, relax at a spa or just take a long walk, there is always something worthwhile to see or do within a short distance. Because of this, Seattle is full of people with a broad spectrum of interests and hobbies.
Seattle is for the open-minded. If you yearn for meeting a broad range of people (anywhere from mega-church protestants to gay rights supporters to Rastafarians), then this is definitely the place for you. On one of my favorite streets in Seattle, 15th Avenue on Capitol Hill (a somewhat undiscovered small town as I like to see it), I can buy a southern breakfast smothered in homemade gravy at Wandering Goose across the street from a vegan restaurant, Sage Cafe. No one scoffs at the sausage being fried across the street from the tempeh. Instead, they just gather at the adjacent pub, Smith, and discuss it over a local brew.
